# Plain text messaging

> SMS carries no formatting, so links need writing out in full. Also covers group messaging.

SMS is a plain-text channel. Formatted hyperlinks (for example `[text](url)`) and internal URL shortening are not supported, and will appear as raw text in the recipient's message.

To share a link, include the full URL directly in your message:

```text theme={null}
Visit us at https://example.com for more information.
```

Most devices and messaging apps automatically render full URLs as clickable links for the recipient.

## What this means in practice

* Write links out in full rather than hiding them behind words.
* Avoid link shorteners you have added yourself, as some carriers treat shortened links as a spam signal.
* Keep messages short. Long messages may be split into several parts by the carrier, and each part can be billed separately.

<Tip>
  This applies to your AI agent as well as your team. If your agent has been taught to send a guidebook or booking link, make sure the knowledge or skill contains the full URL rather than formatted link text.
</Tip>

## Group messaging

Conduit supports group messaging for conversations including your Conduit phone number.

To start a group message, send an outbound text to all intended recipients. Phone numbers must include country codes and be separated by commas.

To assign a name to your group chat, create a new contact with your chosen group name and add the same comma-separated phone numbers.

<Note>
  WhatsApp group chats are not supported in Conduit.

## Frequently asked questions

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Why did my link appear as plain text?">
    Because SMS carries no formatting. A markdown-style link is sent exactly as written, so the recipient sees the brackets rather than a clickable phrase. Include the full address instead and most phones will make it tappable.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Does this apply to WhatsApp too?">
    Yes. WhatsApp messages sent through Conduit are also plain text, so the same guidance applies.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I use a link shortener?">
    You can, but it is worth being careful. Shortened links are a common spam signal for carriers, which can affect whether your message is delivered.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How do I name a group conversation?">
    Create a contact with the name you want and add the same comma-separated numbers to it.
