# Sending emails from Conduit

> Set up email sending to respond using official company email addresses within Conduit's unified inbox.

## Overview

Setting up email sending allows your support team to respond using official company email addresses within Conduit's unified inbox. This centralizes communication across multiple channels including SMS, WhatsApp, email, and chat in one location.

The setup involves adding DNS records for authentication. DKIM records verify you as the legitimate sender, while return path records handle bounced emails. Together, these ensure messages reach inboxes rather than spam folders.

## Set Up Instructions

Go to **Settings > Email**, click **Configure** next to your domain, and open section 4, **Sending emails**. Each record shows its **Type**, **Hostname**, and **Value**, with copy buttons, plus a **Status** that reads as configured once verification succeeds.

DNS providers label these two fields differently, so the names will not always match what Conduit shows. The **Hostname** goes into the field your provider calls **Name**, **Host**, **Hostname**, or **Host name**. The **Value** goes into the field your provider calls **Value**, **Content**, **Data**, or **Points to**. If you are unsure which field is which, the **Hostname** is the short prefix that sits in front of your domain, and the **Value** is the longer string you paste in.

1. The first record is the “DKIM”. It is part of the available mechanisms that exist to authenticate emails: verifying that you’re the actual sender of the email.
2. The second record sets the return path for emails sent from Conduit using your domain. Return paths are used if an email bounces (fails to reach an inbox).

Both of them make sure that your emails reach your users’ email inboxes and do not end up in the spam folder.

The records themselves are the same everywhere, but the steps to add them vary slightly from one DNS provider to another.

## Where to find your records

Go to **Settings > Email**, click **Configure** next to your domain, and open section 4, Sending emails. Each record shows its Type, Hostname, and Value, with copy buttons, plus a Status that reads as configured once verification succeeds.

DNS providers label these two fields differently, so the names will not always match what Conduit shows. The Hostname goes into the field your provider calls **Name**, **Host**, **Hostname**, or **Host name**. The Value goes into the field your provider calls **Value**, **Content**, **Data**, or **Points to**. If you are unsure which field is which, the Hostname is the short prefix that sits in front of your domain, and the Value is the longer string you paste in.

After publishing the records at your DNS provider, click **Re-verify DNS** to check them. Until both records show as configured, Conduit cannot send on your behalf.

## Provider examples

Conduit works with any DNS provider. The providers below are only the ones we see most often, so use them as examples. If yours is not listed, the steps are the same and the records do not change. You only need to find the equivalent fields in your own provider's DNS settings.

## Frequently asked questions

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Which address will my team reply from?">
    By default, whichever address the guest wrote to, so the conversation stays consistent from their side. Your team can change it when composing if they need to.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Why do I need to add DNS records at all?">
    Receiving and sending are separate steps. Forwarding brings mail in, but sending requires proof that you own the domain. The DKIM record authenticates you as the legitimate sender and the return path record handles bounces. Without both, mail providers are likely to reject your messages or route them to spam.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Emails are arriving but I cannot send replies">
    This is almost always DNS. Open section 4, Sending emails, on the domain configuration page and check the Status on both records. If either is not yet configured, the record has not been published or has not propagated. Whoever manages DNS for that domain needs to add it, then click **Verify DNS**.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="My DNS provider is not listed above">
    The records are the same wherever you host DNS. Add one TXT record and one CNAME record using the hostname and value Conduit gives you. Providers label the fields differently, so "Name", "Host", and "Host name" all mean the same thing, as do "Value", "Content", and "Data".
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How long do the records take to take effect?">
    DNS changes propagate on their own schedule, anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. Use **Verify DNS** to recheck. If the records still show as unverified well after you published them, check for typos, particularly stray characters copied along with the value.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Do I need DNS records for a Gmail account?">
    No. Individual Gmail accounts connect through the **Gmail accounts** section of your email settings and are authorized directly with Google. DNS records apply to connected domains only.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Do I need separate records for each domain?">
    Yes. Each domain you connect has its own DKIM and return path records. See [Additional email addresses](/setup/channels/email/alternate-email-addresses).
  </Accordion>
