# Bulk actions

> Clear a backlog by acting on several conversations at once, and know which bulk action is safe to use.

Bulk actions exist mostly for one moment: the first week, when you connect a PMS that has been running for years and several thousand old conversations arrive at once. Rather than working through history you were never going to answer, clear it and start from a clean inbox.

## The three levels

Selecting conversations gives you progressively wider scope, so it is worth knowing which one you are about to use.

| What you select | What it covers |
| - | - |
| Individual conversations | Only the ones you ticked |
| **Select all** on the counter | Every conversation on the current page, typically 20 |
| **Mark all as done** | Every conversation in the Todo list, including ones you have not scrolled to |

Once a selection is active, apply the action, for example **Mark as done**.

<Warning>
  **Mark all as done** is not limited to what you can see. If the counter reads 99+, that is how many conversations it will clear. Use it deliberately when starting fresh.
</Warning>

## Clearing a backlog safely

Before clearing everything, do one pass on what is bold. Bold means the guest sent the last message, so those are the conversations where somebody is genuinely still waiting. See [Reading the conversation list](/inbox/daily-work/conversation-list).

Nothing is destroyed by marking conversations done. They stay searchable in the **Done** tab, and any conversation where the contact replies comes straight back to **To do**.

  <Accordion title="Does marking conversations done delete anything?">
    No. Done is a status, not deletion. The full history stays intact and searchable.
