# What goes where

> Understand where to put facts, process instructions, tone, guardrails, tools, and deployment behavior in V3.

V3 separates agent configuration into focused layers. Use the right layer so the agent can retrieve facts, follow processes, use tools, and stay inside safety boundaries without conflicting instructions.

## Layers

| Layer | What it stores | When the AI reads it | Why it helps |
| - | - | - | - |
| **Knowledge** | Factual details about policies, products, listings, customers, or operations | Retrieved when relevant to the question | Gives the AI facts to work with |
| **Skills** | Conditional process instructions and tool-use guidance | Applied when the scenario matches | Turns repeated SOPs into reusable behavior |
| **Persona** | Role, tone, formatting, and voice | Applied across replies for that agent | Keeps the agent consistent and on brand |
| **Guardrails** | Hard boundaries the agent must not cross | Checked against every response | Prevents risky or unauthorized output |
| **Tools** | Actions and live data lookups | Called when the agent has permission and enough context | Lets the agent do work, not just answer |
| **Behavior** | Escalation, hours, delays, structured output, and hooks | Applied at run time | Controls deployment and safety mechanics |
