# Check-in waivers and resets

> Mark check-in steps as done for a stay, hand them back to the guest, or clear finished answers.

These methods act on one stay's check-in. They are available through REST and MCP to API tokens, OAuth connections and the Operator. Chat and voice agents can't use them.

Every method also requires Portals access for the workspace. `reservation_id` is the PMS reservation ID, the `external_id` that [List portal sessions](https://docs.conduit.ai/api-reference/portals/sessions/list.md) returns.

## Waive steps

Waiving marks steps as done without the guest completing them, for example when the guest already signed or paid somewhere else. Send `step_types` and an optional `reason` (up to 500 characters) that stays with the waiver for your team.

A step the guest already completed can't be waived. A step that's already waived keeps its first waiver. Waiving a required fee first cancels its pending payment.

## Remove a waiver

Removing a waiver hands the step back to the guest. It does nothing when the step isn't waived.

## Reset steps

Resetting clears a stay's completed answers so the guest redoes those steps, and reopens the check-in if it was finished. Agreements, ID checks, guest details, additional questions and other guests can be reset. Damage waivers, payments and deposits can't. Omit `step_types` to reset every completed step that can be reset. Waived steps stay waived.
